Subsidies on the Way...

The Manitoba government is predicting spring flooding this year at levels of 2009 and perhaps worse.  They say even homeowners who've never had water in their basement should take nothing for granted this springLast week, it was reported that the city and province were working on a homeowner subsidy plan that would help reduce the damage from the flood expected this spring.   Yesterday, Mayor Sam Katz and Premier Greg Sellinger announced that there will be subsidies for installing back water valves and sump pumps.  It's still subject to City Council's approval but Katz and Sellinger are urging Winnipeger's not to wait to get the work done.  The program will be retroactive to May 1, 2010 to include work done  since last summer's heavy rainfall.

The program is expected to pay homeowners up to 60% of the cost and will cover up $1,000 towards the installation of a in-line backwater valve and up to $2,000 towards the installation of a sump pump.  To qualify for the subsidy, all work must be done with a permit from city.  The costs will vary from house to house due to depth of sewer piping under basements and how accessible the house sewer is from existing walls and the building's foundation.
